How to Pick the Best Beard Styles for Your Face Shape, According to Science

Beards. They're not just for lumberjacks and Civil War generals anymore. In fact, beards are trendy as all get out! But with so many beard styles to choose from, it can be tough to know the best style for you. Fortunately, Polished Gentleman got a few tips based on science to help you navigate the often-confusing world of men's facial hair.

There are tons of beard styles to select from.

If you have a beard, there's no shortage of styles to select from. And while beards are a very personal choice, they can also be used as a way to express your personality. Beards are a great way to make a statement and show your individuality. The style of the beard will depend on how masculine it is, which depends on its thickness and length, as well as how closely it trims around the edges.

The face shape matters with the style of the beard.

It's no secret that a good beard can make you look like a million bucks. But what about your face shape? Is there any connection between the two? Well, we don't want to brag or anything, but it turns out that yes—there is. In fact, knowing your face shape can help you choose the right facial hairstyle for yourself (and even change up your look completely).

    So let's get started!

    1. A diamond-shaped face works best with a full beard.

A diamond-shaped face is wider across the cheekbones and forehead, but with a narrow chin. This shape works best with a full beard, as it will visually expand your face without making you look overly masculine or thug-like. If you have this facial shape and want to grow out your beard, allow it to grow down over your jawline and chin. The sideburns should be kept short so that they don't extend past halfway down the earlobe; if there's a lot of hair growth under the ears, trim it back so that there's just enough room for an earring stud (if applicable).

    2. An oval face and full chin is perfect for a Garibaldi.

An oval face and full chin is the most common face shape. An oval face is longer than it is wide and has an equal distance between your hairline and mouth. This beard style can work well on this type of face because it will balance out your jawline, making it appear less boxy-shaped.

The Garibaldi beard is also known as a “full beard with sideburns.” It makes use of all available facial hair to create a full look during the day, but then can be styled into a shorter goatee or sideburns at night to give you more flexibility in your facial hairstyling options. It's important that you keep up with trimming so that your beard doesn't look unkempt or too long when paired with short sideburns!

    3. A round face can pull off a great goatee.

A goatee is best for round faces because it draws your face’s attention to the chin and jaw. It also gives you something to play with while you talk and makes your mouth look less wide.

Men with round faces should avoid beards that extend past the middle of their cheeks, as this will make them look even wider. Instead, keep your beard length in line with how long or short you want it to be—it’s a good idea to trim it up every few days so it doesn't get too long/short before you get around to maintaining it again.

    4. An angular chin works best with a Van Dyke or Balbo beard.

If you have an angular chin, the Van Dyke or Balbo beard is the way to go.

The Van Dyke is a goatee with a mustache and soul patch. It's named for 17th-century Dutch painter Anthony van Dyck, who was said to have worn this style of facial hair.

The Balbo is also a full beard with a mustache and soul patch, but it extends much farther down along your jawline than its namesake – Benito Mussolini, the former dictator of Italy – ever did (though his goatees were pretty epic).

    5. A heart-shaped face complements a three-day stubble and full mustache.

If you have a heart-shaped face, with your hairline starting at the temples and pulling down to the chin, then let it grow out from there. If you're sporting a square jawline, or if your face is particularly strong in terms of its shape and structure, this is the style for you. Go for some good old three-day stubble with a full mustache (or fan-type sideburns) that extends down into your beard. And finally, if you've got an especially strong chin and jawline—like Bruce Willis circa Die Hard 2—then this look will frame them perfectly!

    6. A square jawline looks great with a circle beard, soul patch, and anchoring mustache.

If you’re lucky enough to have a square jawline, you’re pretty much obligated to show off that strong jawline. No matter which beard style you choose, the goal should be to draw attention to your jawline and cheekbones—not hide them. Because of this, it’s recommended that you decide a short beard and focus on your chin. The best beard styles for square-shaped faces include the royale beard, the circle beard, the goatee, and the petite goatee.

Finding the right beard style relies on both hair care products and understanding your facial geometry.

Although there are a lot of beard styles out there to select from, it never hurts to run the options by someone else before you get started. After all, we don’t want you looking like a goateed Groucho Marx or having your new style disappear in a matter of weeks due to poor maintenance. So consult with the experts at Beard brand and save yourself some time. They have all the tools and knowledge you need to understand your facial geometry and to make sure your next beard is everything it can be—and more!

Next time you want to style your beard, use a quality beard balm. Beard balms are the best way to achieve the perfect beard style you've been looking for. They keep your beard soft, shiny, and smelling great. Choosing the right beard style can be tricky. With so many styles to decide from, it might seem impossible to figure out what's right for you. But luckily, everyone can find a beard style that suits them with just a bit of help.
